Light flickers, flashes and streams throughout my work, mirroring the energy of life. Light and the notion of coincidences are important throughout my work. Juxtaposing elements within and between works, I seek to engage the viewer in a dialogue about the paradox of existence in which creation and destruction co-exist.
My work takes form through video, painting, performance, photography, collage and installation. As I continue my fascination with space, time and existence, ideas flow between the different media. I re-frame and emphasise occurrences, observing through a window or a camera lens. The glass separates me from my subject and I become an observer of time. Recent video works explore our deep need to connect with nature and its energy whilst living on a planet that we are simultaneously destroying. Painting has become a way of creating the ultimate still. Glass and reflective surfaces remain a constant source of interest. They are like windows on another dimension, even lakes become mirrors, giving the sky back to the earth. They break the monotony of the horizon and burn a hole in time and space.
The garden where I live has become a centre of research where I experiment, building connections with the natural world in the middle of a busy city. I explore the jarring contrast between the urban and the natural as the two worlds overlap. Tending the garden is part of my research. Immersed in the peace of the garden I become submerged in my thoughts as my inner world expands. I imagine extensions to reality, I exist between two worlds.
Born in the East Coast town of Grimsby, UK, Jess graduated from BA Contemporary Arts at Nottingham Trent University in 2004. Since leaving the UK in 2011, she has lived and worked in Brussels.

After significant career breaks to raise her two children born in 2013 and 2017, Jess returned to her artistic practice in 2022. Video camera in hand, she started research in the garden. In this sanctuary, the challenge and position of being a mother/artist colours her work. Her solo exhibition in April 2023 titled;A Veiled Understanding was her contribution to Meet My Arts 2023, The Parcours d’artistes d’Uccle and marked her return to the scene.
