In this work, I focus on a forgotten corner of a bath towel. Soft and absorbent, it bears witness to our most private moments of cleansing, of washing away the grime and becoming bare. I have chosen to render this humble terry cloth through the rich, glossy medium of oil paint, to explore a quiet paradox: we use it to pat dry the most public of our privates – water on skin – whilst it itself becomes damp, heavy, and casually folded in the process. This unassuming corner stands as a symbol for the small, repetitive, yet essential things that form the fabric of our daily lives. It is a touch of comfort, a ritual of purification, and a silent companion at the close of each day. By elevating its stature and bestowing upon it the dignity of a classical painting, I invite the viewer to consider how it is these very minor caregiving objects and daily rituals, so often taken for granted, that sustain us against an overwhelming and chaotic world.

A Vessel for the Night

Oil on Canvas

h: 30 w: 20 d: 4 (cms).

This work presents a stark reduction to its most essential forms: an expanse of sea at night, and upon it, a single, geometric block. It is an exploration of the profound significance that a small, structured presence can hold within an immense and chaotic void. The vast, dark sea represents the scale of problems and uncertainties that can feel paralysing. The block, by contrast, is a 'small matter'—a deliberate, human-scale intervention. It could be an idea, a principle, a solitary act of courage, or the individual within the collective. Its sharp edges and defined form do not fight the darkness but simply exist within it, asserting its own logic and integrity. In focusing on this minimal composition, I ask the viewer to consider the monumental power of the small and the defined when set against the formless and the vast. It is a testament to the idea that even the most modest structure can become a vessel, capable of carrying meaning across the dark seas of the incomprehensible.
