This painting was inspired by a summer’s day in London, when a gentleman stepped onto the tube with his two small dogs. There’s always something quietly joyful about seeing animals on public transport, but this particular moment lingered with me - perhaps because of the striking contrast in size between the owner and his pets. After settling in, the man gently draped a damp cloth over his French Bulldog to help it cool down. There was tenderness in his gesture. The dogs, completely at ease, lay curled beside his feet - a domestic scene yet unfolding in a public space. That small act of care, in the middle of a sweltering 40-degree day, felt deeply human and that of everyday happiness. In that moment I thought: that’s all I want in life, for someone to gently place a cool, damp cloth over me in 40 degree heat.
