Originally from Canada, Andrea Rees currently lives in Brussels, Belgium. After completing studies in commerce, classical art and literature, and film, she went on to receive her postgraduate degree from the University of Toronto and completed an associated internship at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. 

Informed by the worlds of art, design and communications and a professional background that has involved these disciplines, Andrea began her own focused art practice in 2010. It was in Belgium that she discovered an exceptionally vibrant and supportive artistic community, enabling her to first explore words as a medium, and later, porcelain, after completing a series of workshops at ‘Terre!’ - the studio of Brussels artist Françoise De Smet. Looking for a non-verbal form of expression, Andrea had initially planned to study clay but was immediately captivated by the simultaneous strength and delicacy of porcelain.

Over the years, Andrea’s practice has evolved, and today, inspired by the fields of social and participatory art, she is primarily focused on exploring social concerns such as aging, isolation and division, and how words, photography, and ceramic projects can challenge traditional definitions of success, and help nurture understanding and connection - with ourselves, others, and nature.
