Marian's main interests in painting are colour and form, be that human or otherwise. 

She likes the fluidity and manipulative possibilities of oil paint and enjoys experimenting with coloured grounds. She is often surprised to discover how the paint reacts as it is layered, leaving glimmers of contrasting colours visible or scratching through to the surface below, creating a conflict that can make the colour vibrate, producing movement and atmosphere. 

She tend to work from life, finding inspiration from interesting objects found at flea markets and ‘brocantes’, or from life models and sitters.

Marian Hobbs is an artist who was born in the UK, grew up in Antigua, and has lived in Brussels since 1996, returning to the UK between 2011 and 2018. Having studied at Camberwell College of Art, London and running a successful ceramics studio before starting a family, she has always pursued a passion for drawing and painting. After completing a postgraduate certificate in education, Marian has since 2012 been teaching Art and Design in secondary schools, initially in the UK and currently at the European School of Argenteuil, in Waterloo. Since 2022, Marian has been attending life painting classes at Ecole des Arts d’Ixelles, where she has been experimenting with her oil painting process and has taken part in several group exhibitions.
