This collage is composed of many small pieces, remnants of paper and fabric from books. I deconstruct books and incorporate all the various elements into abstract collages. This collage is made on the cover of an old book. Compositionally, the square recurs here in various ways. Many small pieces make up one square, there is the ‘empty’ square and then that one small square in the corner. It seems to be looking at the square below from the corner of its eye. In my opinion, it is precisely the distance between that one small square and the large one that is the essence of this work. The question is....Does it want to belong? Or has it broken away?

Even the tiniest scraps of paper and fabric hold great beauty for me. In this collage, I give them a place and space. All beautifully arranged in a row. They radiate order and tranquility. What happens when one piece is slightly out of place? It is the small actions and deeds that make the difference. Both in a composition and in real life. In these times when grand gestures and actions sometimes overwhelm or frighten me, it is precisely the small gestures that are meaningful and give hope.

In 2024, I made 366 collages on rejected postcards, attempting to capture time or a year in collages. I still enjoy working in this small format. I commute between two living/working locations and therefore work in formats that I can take with me on the train. The small format helps me to just get started and not be afraid to experiment. This particular collage incorporates a few personal items. Namely, a calculation of a knitting pattern from when I was a teenager and a doodle I made while on the phone. I used to keep all these little pieces of paper. It is precisely these small and varied marks that add an extra layer to this collage.
